The union representing correctional and probation officers claims the Department of Correction’s decision to reduce the number of visits probation officers make to released convicts’ homes is not only a public safety risk, but is also illegal.
The nation’s largest private prison company made an enticing offer to 48 states that went something like this: We will buy your prison now if you agree to keep it mostly full and promise to pay us for running it over the next two decades.
The contract allows the state to pay eight attorneys in the firm $475 an hour, about $300 more per hour than contracts with other outside lawyers. (Read the article.)
